When the soil is rich, everything flourishes. Such is the nature of Abbotsford – the city in the country. With a history as rich as its soil, Abbotsford’s development began in 1858 when Royal Engineers were sent to survey the area in response to the Gold Rush along the Fraser River. This led to the building of Old Yale Road which was the first road linking through the Fraser Valley. In 1891, the Canadian Pacific Railway built a line from Mission, on the north side of the Fraser River, to Sumas in Washington State. A station was built where this railway line intersected with Old Yale Road, becoming the site for the Village of Abbotsford. With the arrival of the BC Electric Railway in 1910 Abbotsford experienced an accelerated growth rate that goes on to this day.
