You see the moving trucks pull up and know that a new neighbour is joining your community. While you might be glad that it’s not you who has furniture to place and countless boxes to unpack, you definitely know what it feels like. Moving is exciting and stressful at the same time, so here are a few helpful tips on welcoming your new neighbours:
Share a baked good, a simple appetizer or cold beverage. The first moving day can be tough and exhausting as you have tons of boxes to sort through, so a nice treat is definitely appreciated; it also serves as a great conversation starter.
Keep your new neighbour updated on any upcoming events in your building and community, such as the next strata meeting or community event. This is a good way to start a positive relationship with your neighbour and inform them of what is happening in your community.
Be considerate with your pets. You may assume that everyone is accustomed to living around pets, but in reality not everyone is. Be sure to keep your dogs, cats, birds or other animals under control when around new neighbours that aren’t yet used to living near pets.
Host a welcome potluck party. If you are moving into a new community and there are several new homeowners moving in around the same time as you, book the amenities room, clubhouse and organize a potluck party. This is a fun way to meet those neighbours that may not live directly next door.
We are a society on the go, on our phones and always rushing along but making a connection within your community doesn’t have to be hard -- so say hello and welcome your new neighbour!
