Richmond will soon have a new 4.2-acre community park.

The park, being constructed on the southwest corner of Hazelbridge Way and Cambie Road is the result of a partnership between Polygon Homes and the City of Richmond.

Estimated to cost $4.2 million, the park is being financed partly by the developer’s $1.2 million developmental cost charge for the adjacent Avanti high-rise development unveiled on Monday.

“We wanted to create an urban park that’s very inclusionary, reflecting the City of Richmond and what Richmond has become; a place for people of all communities and cultures to get together,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Polygon Homes’ latest project includes a 15-storey flatiron style building – a first of its kind in Richmond – a four-storey, 5,000 square foot clubhouse for Avanti residents and the community park, for use by everyone in Richmond.

“Most of the growth is going to be here in the city centre. Instead of retail or industrial land, we want neighbourhoods,” added Brodie.

The new park will include water features, a public space for events and celebrations as well as public artwork. The park is expected to completed by 2015.

The anticipated completion of the flatiron building is in 2016.
